Ulla Connor:
Director, Indiana Center for Intercultural Communication,Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Talk title: Intercultural Rhetoric: A Call for Interactive Accommodation
Dr. Connor is a leading researcher in intercultural communication and linguistics
and has published widely on languages and cultures. Recipient of many research
grants, Dr. Connor is most recently co-editor of Contrastive rhetoric:
Reaching to intercultural rhetoric (2008) and author of Contrastive
rhetoric: Crosscultural aspects of second language writing (1996).
She has taught and lectured in many countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, North
America, and South America.
Priscilla Rogers:
Stephen M. Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, English Language Institute
Talk title: "How May I Help You?" Call Center Conversations As Lessons in Politeness for Global Business
In a broad context, Pris Rogers' research focuses on improving the management
of communications that are critical for business. Current research focuses on
the complexities involved in reporting adverse news externally and internally.
She recently examined how prepared soon-to-be-new hires in Asia and the US are
for subordinate reporting, particularly when the news is bad. This latter effort
elaborates her theory of 'organizational voice' where she argues that an
organization's unique linguistic and rhetorical patterns, genre use, media
choices, and communication protocols for timing and distribution comprise a
'voiceprint' that may enhance or restrict participation.
Fethi Helal:
University of Jendouba, Tunisia
Talk title: Genres, Styles and Discourse Communities in Global Communicative Competition: The Case of the Franco-American AIDS Controversy (1983 - 1987)
Dr. Helal's research focuses on rhetorical analysis of early published AIDS papers.
